Wauquiez Centurion 45sThis is the first in our boat review series. We plan on may more of these reviews and will concentrate on various types and sizes of sailboat and powerboat The review is about the equipment the Owner choose to use onboard his new boat. This boat is the cruising choice for a sailboat racer and is intended for family use. The boat was very ably put together by the people at Annapolis Yacht Sales. Here we are going to take a look at some of the different equipment used.
Dock ShockThe first thing you notice when you get to the boat is how it is tied up. The boat is on a T head and is exposed to southerly breeze which although the marina is in a creek the side loads in a big breeze still push the boat hard up against the pilings. To offset this the Owner installed a dock shock. You can see by the picture just one amidships dock shock is keeping the boat away from the dock quite easily.
You can also see the fenders and fender board are in place but they are not touching the dock. The dock shock is mounted conveniently on the standard amidships cleat.
The dock shock I witnessed working in side winds up to 30 knots and keeping the gap between the fender board and the pilings.
Dock Shock recommend two of the shocks for this size of boat.
Spinnaker FurlerNow we take a look at the spinnaker furler by Bamar called the Roll Gen T2P TV Video of the Roll Gen in action aboard a J/124 The video was taken in Key West and shows under sail how easy the Roll Gen is This is a very different system than say the spinnaker snuffer. The set up is like jib furler or a code 0 furler. There is a continuous drum at the bottom and a halyard swivel at the top connected by a rope stay which is in a rubber extrusion. The spinnaker is a normal asymmetrical shape. The luff length needs to be 3-4% longer than the distance between the attachment points. The attachment points are the shackle under the halyard swivel and the wire strop attached to the bottom drum. You can set the whole thing up at the dock before you depart and unroll the spinnaker when you want. The Wauquiez has a custom pole that had been installed as you need space to attach the lower unit. Look at the roll gen page and you can see two options for getting a pole from Bamar and Selden. See in the picture we added a velcro strap the keep the spinnaker sheets in place, which aids in setting and lowering.
Here is the spinnaker unfurled and flying. You can see the lazy spinnaker sheet taken around the outside for an outside gybe. The experience of using the Roll gen was easy. Once its set up you can furl and unfurl at leisure. I have not tried it in any wind above 15 knots yet, and I am not sure If I would leave it up in winds over that while going upwind, which we do in winds up to that. After the days sail we ended up lowering the Roll Gen directly down into the forward
anchor locker, with the drum still attached to the sprit. The
drum and the swivel were then disconnected and lowered also into the
locker. This makes the ends readily accessible and makes hoisting the assembly much easier next time. Down below
In the above view you can see the Sony flat screen TV . If you look forward you can see in the forward cabin the stripped Newport collection of bedding and linens by Victoria Yachting.
The fridge/freezer utilizes a standard refrigeration unit which is front opening. This allows for easier access and is divided up well and helps storing. There is a separate ice box.
In the galley we found this strainer from Dexas. The strainer is called
a pop strainer
and is
Wauquiez have addressed
that by incorporating an opening port in the window. A little difficult
to see there are two opening ports.

The small diameter ducts with a higher airflow make the Webasto units desirable. The smaller ducts will be a bonus to installers and can get into smaller areas.
